Computer Information Systems students

All Computer Information Systems (CIS) students develop a strong foundation of computer systems, computer technology, and business systems skills.

The freshmen/sophomore years focus on developing a strong understanding of computer systems concepts, components, and terminology. Students develop solid applications skills with Microsoft Office and prepare for the Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) exam.

All students will develop strong Web design & development skills and knowledge of various Internet technologies. These skills are strengthened throughout all four years in shop.

CIS – Course Description:

The Computer Information Systems Program at Old Colony RVTHS is designed to give students a solid foundation in computer and business systems skills and knowledge. Unique from other shops, CIS offers two Chapter 74 programs (occupational programs of study). The programs are Office Administration (OA) and Program & Information Systems (IS).

These programs have a common foundation of computer applications and general computer knowledge. All students acquire these skills in the freshman and sophomore years. The students pick an area of specialization at the end of their sophomore year. Specialized training occurs in the junior and senior years. Another unique element of the CIS shop is the inclusion of Web Design & Development training for all students. This curriculum is woven into all four years of study, regardless of OA/IS specialization.

CIS – Goals:

Computer Information Systems students

It is the intent of the program to give students sufficient skills to obtain entry level office technology, computer programming, computer support, and/or Web design & development positions. Additionally, this program will provide a solid foundation to those students wishing to further their education.

CIS – Shop/Classroom Format:

The instructors in the CIS department employ a variety of teaching and evaluation strategies. While lecture and reading assignments are sometimes used, the majority of the time our students are engaged in hands-on, project-based learning activities. Students are required to maintain a portfolio of their accomplishments.

Students are graded on a daily basis for their conduct, effort, and attitude. Additionally, students are graded on written tests and quizzes, as well as their projects. Expectations for student performance conform to industry standards.

CIS – Programs of Study:

At the July 22, 2009 meeting, the Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School District Committee voted:
"To change the District's Computer Information Technology Department name to Computer Information Systems (C.I.S) for grades 9 & 10; and Office Administration (O.A.) and Program & Information Systems (I.S.) for grades 11 & 12."

  • Program & Information Systems (IS)

Program & Information Systems (IS) students will be trained in all aspects of software development. Students are introduced to the applications development life cycle, as well as development concepts. The students will learn to gather and document program requirements, as well as develop strong coding skills. Students will also learn the importance of testing and documentation. In the junior year, students will create programs in the Visual Basic .Net environment. In the senior year, students will create programs in Java.

  • Office Administration (OA)

Office Administration (OA) students will strengthen their skills in the more complex operations of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint). Additionally, students will reinforce their office applications skills with project-based activities that integrate multiple aspects of today's modern office. Office Administration students will also learn and become proficient in a variety of software applications and administrative duties that are common in today's business environment.

  • Web Design & Development

All Old Colony CIS students will become proficient in Web Design & Development, employing a variety Internet technologies through a four-year program of study. Students will learn how to plan, construct, and design websites. Coursework will include technologies, languages, and applications such as HyperText Markup Language (HTML), Extensible HyperText Markup Language (XHTML), Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), JavaScript, Adobe PhotoShop, Flash, ActionScript, Adobe Premiere, and other emerging Web technologies. Digital video acquisition and processing will also be covered. Internet fundamentals include learning how to use Web browsers, search engines, and conducting Internet research. Any CIS student can volunteer to become a member of the Old Colony Web Team (design & development, updating, and maintaining the school's website).
