Old Colony won First Place in the 2009 Bristol Community College (BCC) Computer Science Website Contest on June 11, 2009, in Fall River, MA. This marks the 5th first place finish in the six BCC web contests that Old Colony's web design students have participated in.
The first place team consisted of two juniors from the Computer Information Technology (CIT) Department: Robert Dupre (Lakeville) and Stephen Mantia (Carver). They received a First Place trophy and will share the top prize - a $100 gift certificate from Best Buy.
Students from Greater New Bedford Vocational-Technical High School finished in Second Place. Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School and Taunton High School were the other participating schools. Approximately 50 students from the four southeastern Massachusetts schools participated in this year's BCC web design competition.
Eighteen CIT students (2 juniors, 13 sophomores, and 3 freshmen) were accompanied by CIT instructors Karen Guenette and John C. Souza to the BCC Web Design Competition.

Eight junior and senior programming students participated in the Bristol Community College Programming Contest on March 18, 2009. Our students were grouped into three teams. The juniors competed using the Visual Basic.NET development environment, while the seniors used a NetBeans Java environment. The competition had each team work on a set of problems of varying difficulty. The programming contest featured twelve teams from six local area high schools.
While competitive, Old Colony did not place in the contest. This was a good opportunity for the junior programming students observe how the contest was run and what to expect next year. The students now also have a good idea of how the competitive this contest is. During the bus ride from the contest, the students discussed key skills that would help them to do better next year. Among these would be a handling two dimensional arrays and string manipulation. With the sharpening of these skills Old Colony will do better in the future.

Twenty-nine students from Old Colony's Computer Information Technology (CIT) Department participated in Bristol Community College's (BCC) fifth annual Website Contest on Tuesday, May 29, 2007. Twenty students from Tri-County RVTHS also competed in the contest. Students were instructed to build hand-coded websites on selected computer information technology topics. A panel of judges at the college announced the following results and prizes for the 2007 BCC Website Contest:
- 1st prize ($125 Best Buy gift certificate): Sam Kline & Jon Selesky (Tri-County)
- 2nd prize ($75 Best Buy gift certificate): Eli Reznekervitz (Old Colony)
- 3rd prize ($50 Best Buy gift certificate): Adam Veary (Old Colony)

The freshmen and junior CIT field trip to the Microsoft Corporation office in Waltham, MA, was an enriching and thoroughly enjoyable experience for CIT students and staff. The students were exposed to the corporate environment and introduced to the process of holding a formal business meeting. The students were also introduced to the most recent software products that Microsoft is developing. They were given a tour of the Microsoft site which included a presentation in the "smart" room - a theater/ media room that simulates the future when several products and technologies will interact with each other in the home and business environments. The students were also given a demonstration of several developing technologies and how they would improve of change the way businesses worked.

Two CIT students won medals at the State SkillsUSA Skill and Leadership Conference, held on April 26-28, 2007, at Marlborough, MA. Jade Worthington (Acushnet) placed second in the state and won a Silver Medal in the Office Computer Applications competition. Michael Cormier (Mattapoisett) placed third in the state and won a Bronze Medal in the Computer Programming competition.

Old Colony's reigning Massachusetts SkillsUSA Web Design champions finished in 6th place at the SkillsUSA National Championships in Kansas City, Missouri. Competing as sophomores, the team of Matthew Willett (Carver) and Adam Veary (Freetown) did a fantastic job at the highly competitve SkillsUSA Nationals. The Old Colony students scored high on written tests and the hands-on website test at the June 19-24, 2006, event. Matt and Adam are currently juniors in the Computer Information Technology Department.

Four sophomores from the Computer Information Technology Department recently completed a website for the Rochester Council on Aging (COA) Senior Center. The student web design team consisted of: Matthew Willett (Carver), Zachary Card (Carver), Adam Veary (Freetown), and Michael Poland (Lakeville). The students visited the Rochester Senior Center and met with Director Sharon Lally on April 6, 2006. The sophomores toured the facility, took digital photos, and compiled the information and content for the website. The students presented the new website at the Rochester Council on Aging Senior Center's Annual Meeting on June 7, 2006, at the COA facility on 67 Dexter Lane, Rochester, MA. Four junior students from the Computer Information Technology Department won trophies and prizes for their placement in the Fourth Annual Bristol Community College (BCC) Website Contest, held on May 11, 2006, at the Fall River campus. Eighty students from six area high schools participated in the competition. The team of Jeffrey Cormier (Acushnet) and Jamie Pooler (Carver) won a First Place trophy and a $100 Best Buy gift certificate. The team of Adam Veary (sophomore/Freetown) and Matthew Willett (sophomore/Carver) won a Gold Medal at the annual Massachusetts Skills Championships and Leadership Conference, held in Marlboro, MA, from April 27-29, 2006. Competing in the Web Design competition, Adam & Matt created a website for a Massachusetts golf course. The two CIT students will now represent Massachusetts and compete against the top high school web designers in the country at the SkillsUSA National Championships in Kansas City, MO, from June 19-24, 2006.

On March 16, 2006, eight CIT students participated in Bristol Community College's Second Annual Computer Programming Competition. Students from 6 southeastern Massachusetts schools competed. Two Old Colony teams tied for 4th place in the computer programming contest. They were: The team of Jamie Pooler (Carver) and Michael Cormier (Mattapoisett), and the team of David Cook (Rochester) and Bryant Hampston (Lakeville). Congratulations to all of the CIT students who were involved in the competition!

The team of Jeffrey Golenski (senior) and Jeffrey Cormier (sophomore), both of Acushnet, made the entire Old Colony community proud as they won the Bronze Medal at the annual SkillsUSA National Championships, held in Kansas City, Missouri, from June 21-24, 2005. Competing in the Web Design competition, Jeff G. & Jeff C. completed a written test, organized a storyboard, participated in an interview with judges, and created a functional website for a non-profit organization. Representing Massachusetts, the Old Colony team placed third (behing New Jersey & Oregon) in a field of 32 teams of the top high school web designers in the country.

On May 12, 2005 six CIT seniors participated in Bristol Community College's first Computer Programming contest. Thirteen teams representing 5 schools from southeastern Massachusetts competed. The Old Colony team of Nicholas Jenkins (Acushnet) and Lisa Ellis (Freetown) tied for fourth place. Other seniors who participated are Stefan Beaulieu (Acushnet), Kristy Bernacchio (Lakeville), Jeff Golenski (Acushnet), and Scott Lombard (Carver).

On April 28-30, 2005, Old Colony's Chapter of Skills-USA participated in the state Skills Championships and Leadership Conference in Marlborough, Massachusetts. Fifteen students represented OC and competed against the finest vocational students in the state, including 4 CIT students. In the inaugural Web Design competition, the team of Jeffrey Golenski (senior) and Jeffrey Cormier (sophomore), both of Acushnet, took the Gold Medal. The two state champions will now compete for national recognition at the Skills USA National Skills Championships and Leadership Conference in Kansas City, Missouri, from June 20-25, 2005. The team of Kyle O'Neil (junior) and Michael Cormier (sophomore) also participated in the state competition.

Fifty-nine students from six area high schools participated in the competition. The team of Derek Valentim and Nathan Cabral won a First Place trophy and a $100 Best Buy gift certificate. Brett Duguay won a Second Place trophy and a $75 Best Buy gift certificate. The team of Cam Charroux and Christopher Kirk also won a Second Place trophy and shared a $75 Best Buy gift certificate. Six CIT seniors presented their "senior projects" to a panel of three judges (who had a total of 6 votes) and 14 sophomore CIT students (who had a total of 7 votes) on Friday, February 18, 2005. The projects, which took six weeks to complete, consisted of research, project design and development, and a 8-15 page written report. The team of Jeffrey Golenski and Stefan Beaulieu won first-place and a $30 Best Buy gift certificate. Kristy Bernacchio won second-place and a $15 Best Buy gift certificate. Other participating seniors included Nicholas Jenkins, Lisa Ellis, and Scott Lombard. A pizza party followed the event.

Three CIT seniors gave an informative Powerpoint presentation to members of the Tri-Town Business Association on February 16, 2005, in the school library. The students, all Acushnet residents and members of the school's National Honor Society Chapter, were Rebecca Viera, Jeffrey Golenski, and Stefan Beaulieu. Senior Nicholas Jenkins assisted in the presentation. The workshop topic was "E-Commerce and the Importance of Having A Business Website." Members of the local business group asked questions about website design and development following the student presentation.

Fifteen Old Colony juniors from the Computer Information Technology (CIT) Department presented a new website to Massachusetts State Senator Joan M. Menard on Dec. 15, 2004, in the school's cafetorium. Over 170 people attended the unveiling of the website, including Senator Menard and staff; Old Colony administration, faculty, and staff; members of the Old Colony District School Committee; officials from the Massachusetts Department of Education; parents and family of the CIT students; and other invited guests. The students met with Senator Menard at the State House in Boston and took a second field trip to towns in the Senator's district for digital photos and information. Students from Old Colony's Computer Information Technology Department presented two web sites at a special Acushnet Board of Selectmen meeting on June 3, 2004. Fifteen CIT sophomores built the official Town of Acushnet web site, complete with dozens of pages, photos, printable forms, and other features. Sophomore Steve Bernat designed and presented the Acushnet River Valley Golf Course web site. The event was filmed live by Acushnet Cable TV. The Acushnet site can be viewed at www.acushnet.ma.us. Bristol Community College hosted its 2nd Annual Web Design Competition on May 14, 2004. Twenty-five students from Old Colony's Computer Information Technology Department participated in the contest. Jeff Golenski (junior from Acushnet) won first-place and Dan Wales (junior from Acushnet) won second-place. They received trophies and thumb drives for their work. Five Old Colony students won prizes at the First Annual Information Technology Expo held on March 19, 2004, at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. The competition, sponsored by the SouthCoast Education Compact, was attended by 106 students from various high schools in the southeastern Massachusetts region. Students wrote a detailed project analysis, took a written test, presented their projects, and completed a "hands-on" computer lab test. Local business and education leaders served as judges.

Computer Information Technology students from Old Colony won first, second, third, and fourth prizes, as well as an honorable mention, in the 1st Annual Bristol Community College Computer Science Website Competition. The contest was open to all high school students in southeastern Massachusetts. Students had to create a working website based computer science themes.
