House and Mill Carpentry

Old Colony House and Mill Carpentry Department

The House and Mill Carpentry Department trains students in all aspects of the carpentry field, beginning with use of hand tools and basic shop projects in grade 9, and concluding with customized cabinet and kitchen design in grade 12.

Students are also trained extensively on framing, floors, walls, ceiling, and common rafters. Off-site projects give students the on-the-job training they need to become employable.

Students learn:

  • Application of technologies in the construction field.
  • Basic home construction.
  • Home interior remodeling.

Under the direction of carpentry instructor Robert Francis, students from the House and Mill Carpentry Department built a gazebo on the campus of Old Colony from September to December 2000. The finished gazebo, above left, was adorned with a Christmas tree for the holidays.

Above right, a slide show of 12 images tracks the progress of the gazebo construction. (Note: The slide show is complete when the two images match).
