OLD COLONY AWARDED LIFE SCIENCES GRANT

Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School (OCRVTHS) is pleased to be the recipient of the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center Equipment and Supply Grant in the amount of $99,479.00.

The funding will aid in developing biotechnology curriculum and to purchase equipment to support experimentation in the life sciences. Old Colony is teaming with Greater New Bedford Regional Vocation Technical High School (GNBRVTHS) to build a consortium for the teaching of life sciences in Grades 9-12 in the southcoast region. Together they are sharing in the development and integration of curriculum modules that can be integrated within existing biology classes, creation of new upper level classes in the life sciences, and an online professional development network for biology/life science educators in the southcoast region.

Together, the schools are working with local institutions of higher and industry to make sure the school's curriculum and programming are aligned with industry needs and are committed to constructing a life sciences professional development and curriculum network across southeastern MA.

The school's roles are defined as follows: Old Colony is uniquely posed to develop and lead an online professional development network encompassing new curriculum, new pedagogy, sharing, and support for biology/life science educators, while GNBRVTHS is leading the program's efforts in workforce development and industry relations. Knod Both schools will work to continue developing new and expanded relationships with southcoast biotechnology industries and institutions of higher education.

The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center is a quasi-public agency tasked with implementing the state's ten-year, $1 billion Life Sciences Initiative. This grant program seeks the further development of the state's life sciences workforce by providing funding for equipment and supplies. Old Colony was one of thirty-two applicants that received funding. A special thanks to OC's Library/Media Specialist, Marcia Kessler for her effort and skill in securing this grant.

Sixth Annual Old Colony Golf Tournament, May 15, 2010, Acushnet River Valley Golf Course, Acushnet, MA

Sixth Annual Old Colony Golf Tournament sets record

The Sixth Annual Old Colony Golf Tournament was a huge success, raising almost $30,000 for the Old Colony Student Scholarships and Services Fund. The golf tournament, evening dinner, auction, and raffle events generated this impressive amount thanks to the generosity of the Old Colony community.

This year's golf tourney was held at the Acushnet River Valley Golf Course in Acushnet, MA, on Saturday, May 15, 2010. The event was held in honor of a local hero, Tyler J. Trahan, a resident of Freetown who graduated from Old Colony RVTHS in 2004, Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 2006, and then enlisted in the US Navy. Tyler was tragically killed on April 30, 2009, fighting for his country in Iraq.

Old Colony wants to thank John Abaray and the Golf Committee for all of their dedication and hard work. The school also thanks all of the families, friends, alumni, faculty, staff, and guests for their generous support, and for making the day a fun, memorable, and profitable one. Old Colony also wants to recognize TRANE for their generous donation of $10,000. All of the proceeds from the golf tournament will directly benefit the students of Old Colony. Thanks to everyone for making this important fundraiser the best one ever!

Acushnet adventurer talks to CIT sophomores about Antarctica experience

Antarctica

In late March 2009, sophomores from Old Colony's Computer Information Technology (CIT) shop had the opportunity to hear Corey Wilson, an Acushnet man who graduated from New Bedford High School in 2004, talk about his adventures in the Dry Valleys of Antarctica. From November through February, the students from Karen Guenette's sophomore computer class shared the adventure vicariously by following the Internet blog that Wilson created.

Corey earned a degree in environmental studies from the University of Colorado last year, and jumped at the chance to spend the austral summer studying glacial runoff on Earth's southernmost continent. As part of the Long Term Ecological Resource Network, a study conducted under the auspices of the National Science Foundation, Wilson operated from a remote base camp at Lake Hoare in 77 degrees south latitude, in the land of the midnight sun.

The CIT students thoroughly enjoyed Corey's presentation and stunning photographs of Antarctica.
