Old Colony sponsors Jump Start program
Integrated curriculum helps students prepare for MCAS
September 8, 2003
ROCHESTER -- Old Colony Regional Vocational-Technical High School sponsored a 20-day MCAS Summer Jump Start Program for sophomores and freshmen.
The students received academic instruction based on the curriculum frameworks.
Also, the class of 2006 explored the vocational area of computer information, while the class of 2007 explored house and mill carpentry or Graphic Communication and Design.
The staff developed an integrated curriculum that incorporated writing, reading, math, science and Computer Curriculum Corporation lab with the students' hands-on learning styles and vocational interest.
The instructors were divided into two teams. Thomas Hesketh, Stuart Norton, Toni Weeden, Nancy Castino, Paul Sleight and Robert Avellar teamed up to instruct the class of 2007.
The class of 2006 team of instructors consisted of Paul Brodeur, Derek Domingos, Tammy Hoyle, Charles Seguer and Audrey Henry.
There were many teacher aides in the summer program to assist instructors and students in the classroom. Lizbeth Blouin, Stacy Doyon, Janra Bettencourt, David Brodeur, Seth Castino and Stephanie Essenburg were among those on staff.
Caryn Gamache, peer mediator at Old Colony, facilitated the components of the summer program.
Many parents attended the program's closing activities on Aug. 7, when students proudly displayed their projects and certificates of merit were presented.
The MCAS Jump Start Summer Program was made possible through an Academic Support Services Grant.
Old Colony was awarded this grant by the Department of Education.
The pre- and post-testing results, the quality of the projects and the pride reflected in the students' faces at the closing ceremony indicated that the program was a success.
