Dire warning

The Grim Reaper came to Old Colony Regional Vocational-Technical High School in Rochester yesterday with a grim message: every day, 48 people die in the United States because of drug or alcohol-related car crashes. To drive the point home, Old Colony's Students Against Destructive Decisions chapter sponsored a chilling demonstration. A Grim Reaper went from classroom to classroom, removing several students at a time, explained SADD president Gerry Santos. The students returned to their classes, with their faces painted in a death masque; each also carried a single black rose.

At the end of the school day, they proceeded outside where a hearse, on loan from Saunders-Dwyer Funeral Home awaited them. Mr. Santos said the impetus for the program was that "prom time and Memorial Day are often associated with drug and alcohol-related deaths. We hope we can help prevent these disasters."
