Freetown and Lakeville students have been making their mark at Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School this spring.

Of the dozen Old Colony students participating in the Massachusetts Vocational Industrial Clubs of America Skills USA Championship held in Fitchburg earlier this month, four won medals, including Laura Bouchard of Lakeville, who took a silver medal in the desktop publishing category.

The Old Colony chapter of the National Honor Society recently inducted new members, including Ms. Bouchard and fellow Lakeville residents Kelly Beard, Daniel Hoeg and Lisa Merithew. Students are selected for membership based upon their scholarship, leadership, service and character by the Honor Society Faculty Council.

This year's officers of the National Honor Society were recognized for their leadership service during the induction ceremony, including Vice President Marietta E. Knox of Lakeville.

Excellence in Effort awards were recently presented to a dozen students chosen by shop instructors for their special effort and motivation. Shawn Voisine of East Freetown was chosen for recognition in electronics, while Lakeville students Daniel Irwin, David Young and Michelle Jones were honored for their work in automotives, carpentry and health careers, respectively.

Each of the winners was presented with an Old Colony jacket and a framed certificate, in addition to having their names placed in the school's Excellence in Effort hall showcase.

Eighteen students recently completed extensive training in conflict resolution and peer mediation techniques. The program, instituted at Old Colony five years ago, serves as a voluntary, confidential way for students to deal with the inevitable conflicts of life.

Among those completing the training were Nancy Adams of Lakeville, and Corinne Charbonneau and Kristen Glasglow of Freetown.

Twelve students enrolled in the school's cosmetology department earned certification in artificial nail application, including Freetown residents Heather Quintin, Amy Pacheco and Kelly Shurtleff and Lakeville students Jamie Chadwick, Jennifer Lima, Theresa Murray and Shanna Nota.

Cosmetology students also held their annual Mother's Day celebration this month. Mothers, aunts and grandmothers were treated to a buffet and invited to have a manicure, facial, haircut, hair color, perm or style.
