Culinary arts students at Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School learn their craft by doing. The program puts them, alternately, in the classroom for two weeks to study theory and concepts and plan menus, then places them in the kitchen for the next two weeks to execute what they've learned.
The kids prepare the food, cook it and then serve it at the school's restaurant, The Cougar's Den. They make two entrees a day in addition to a la carte items such as burgers and sandwiches.
The restaurant is open to the public 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. While the student body eats its meals in the cafeteria, honor roll students earn passes to dine at the Cougar's Den.
"The food is awesome," declares Gary Brown, assistant superintendent.
Interested in stopping by for a bite? Old Colony is at 476 North Avenue in Rochester, MA. Call 508-763-8011 and ask for the culinary department if you have questions.
