Augusto B. Costa to serve on MASC committee

ROCHESTER --Augusto B. Costa, an 11-year veteran of the Old Colony Regional Vocational-Technical School Committee, has been named to the Massachusetts Association of School Committees All-State School Committee.

"I feel humbled and proud to receive this recognition," Mr. Costa said.

"I'm very proud of the school," Mr. Costa said. "I'm proud of the school and proud to say I'm a member of the School Committee."

Mr. Costa is a very big supporter of vocational education and the strides vocational schools have made in the past 20 years.

"I believe vocational education is the way to go," he said. "I am proud of the way academics are structured now. Kids can pursue a trade or go to college. Today, kids can go either way. It's great for them."

Mr. Costa received his bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Fitchburg State College, and was a teacher and administrator at Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational-Technical High School before becoming a member of the Old Colony family.

Paul Schlichtman, MASC 2004 president, notified Mr. Costa of his appointment a few weeks ago and presented his award at an awards dinner in Worcester. although Mr. Costa does not know what new responsibilities he will have with his appointment, he is ready for the challenge.

"It's terrific working with Gus," said Old Colony Superintendent Director David J. Ferreira. "He's very active in all school activities and a real supporter of the football team. He is a gentleman and a professional educator."

He retired from administration four years ago and now enjoys helping out around the school and serving on the School Committee.

"I've got to tell you, retirement is beautiful," Mr. Costa said with a laugh.
