ROCHESTER -- Old Colony Regional Vocational-Technical High School's chapter of the National Honor Society is hosting its inaugural cancer walk from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
The event will be held at the school's track and football field. Donations will be accepted and all funds will go to the American Cancer Society.
"People should come because it is for a good cause," said Melanie Ross, a senior studying computer information systems, and one of the organizers of the project.
The National Honor Society is donating all proceeds and the organization "is all about helping the community and leadership," Miss Ross said.
"I wanted (Honor Society members) to take the initiative and they did," said Christine Watling, NHS adviser and the library media specialist for Old Colony.
The cancer walk is part of the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life program. Relay For Life is the society's signature event where teams gather at schools, parks and fairgrounds and run or walk laps in relay to raise funds.
The Old Colony chapter of the National Honor Society has received national recognition for its contributions to the community. Last year it received the Outstanding Service Project Award for the fourth time at the NHS Conference in Orlando, Fla.
In February, Old Colony donated 35 fleece blankets to a local nursing home. Last October, the chapter had its annual book drive, collecting and receiving more than 200 children's books and delivering them to Rochester Memorial School.
