Local Student Honored for Community Service
Lacey Cabral was named the Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School District volunteer of the year in the 2011 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. Lacey was recognized for her volunteer work as an office assistant to her Church Director.
Sponsored by Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the awards recognize outstanding community service by young Americans. Ms. Cabral is now eligible for the Massachusetts youth volunteer of the year awards.
Two State Honorees, one middle level and one high school student, will be named in February. Each will receive a $1,000 award, a silver medallion, and a trip to Washington, D.C. for recognition ceremonies with a parent or guardian next May.
At the Washington event, ten National Honorees will be named by a distinguished national selection committee, and each will receive an additional $5,000 grant from the Prudential Foundation for a nonprofit, charitable organization of his or her choice.
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards are supported by Girl Scouts of the USA, National 4-H Council, American Red Cross, YMCA of the USA, Hands On Network(generated by the Points of Light Institute) and many other national youth, service and education organizations.
Principal's Leadership Award Nominee
Jacob Cornell, an Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School senior has been nominated to compete in the NASSP/Herff Jones Principal's Leadership Award (PLA) scholarship program, cosponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) and Herff Jones, Inc. One hundred national PLA winners will be chosen this spring to receive college scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $12,000.
High School principals from across the country were able to nominate one of their student leaders. Nominees were selected based on their leadership skills, participation in service organization and clubs; achievements in the arts and sciences; employment experience; and academic record. They were also required to write an essay.
Jacob Cornell is an outstanding member of the class of 2011, who possesses many innate leadership qualities. Jacob's accomplishments are substantiated by ranking 3rd in his class, earning SKILLS USA Silver Medals in Electronic Technologies, and being the recipient of the Student of the Month Awards. He is also acknowledged for completion of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration General Industry and Career Safe Courses.
Jacob is a good role model and is well respected by his teachers and peers. He values his education and is highly motivated and dedicated to reaching his goal of obtaining a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice. Jacob was presented with the 2011 Principal's Leadership Certificate of Merit during the District School Committee meeting held on Wednesday, January 19, 2011.
Walter J. Markham Nominee
Automotive senior, Adam Hebert of Acushnet, has been selected as Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School's nominee for the 2010-2011 Walter J. Markham Award.
The Walter J. Markham Award is presented annually to a senior graduating from a vocational/technical high school who has demonstrated leadership, good attendance, and excellence in technical and academic studies. The state-wide award program is sponsored by the Massachusetts Association of Vocational Administrators.
The winner of the Walter J. Markham Award will receive a $500 cash award to be used toward college tuition or for the purchase of tools or equipment. Each vocational and technical high school in Massachusetts submits one nominee and a winner is selected by a special award committee.
The award is presented to commemorate Walter J. Markham, who brought growth and improvements to the state vocational/technical system as the Director of the Bureau for Vocational Education and then as the first Associate Commissioner for Occupational Education.
Seventh Annual Old Colony Scholarship Golf Tournament Recognizes and Honors Local Business Owner
The Seventh Annual Old Colony Golf Tournament to be held at the Acushnet River Valley Golf Course in Acushnet, MA, on Saturday, May 21, 2011 will honor local business owner, Dennis Hudon, a 1981 graduate of Old Colony's Machine and Tool Technology Shop. Mr. Hudon is the owner of N.C. Hudon Crane and Rigging Company, Inc. in New Bedford, a family-owned and operated business since 1946. For over sixty years, the Hudon family has been providing professional rigging and repair services to New Bedford's fishing fleets, as well as quality performance and conscientious service to manufacturing and general business industries throughout southern New England.
Mr. Hudon's son, Matthew also graduated from Old Colony's Machine and Tool Technology Shop in 2006. Mr. Hudon and his family have generously supported Old Colony in many capacities, as well as annually contributing to the golf tournament scholarship fund. The Old Colony Golf Committee thanks Dennis Hudon, his business and his family for having a direct impact on the students who benefit from this annual event.
Old Colony invites families, friends, alumni, faculty, staff, guests, and anyone in the southeastern Massachusetts community who wants to participate, to a memorable, fun family event and an important fundraiser for the Old Colony Student Scholarships and Services Fund. Skills USA School Competition Results
On Friday, January 28, 2011, the Old Colony Chapter of SkillsUSA held its annual school competition awards ceremony. All winners were recognized and are now eligible to compete at the District Conference to be held at Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational High School on March 11, 2011. Please see the attached Press Release to see the winners in each category.
First day of school is August 31, 2010
Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School announces that classes will begin for all students on Tuesday, August 31, 2010. This will be a full day of school.

Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School has announced its early dismissal dates for the 2010-2011 school year. The early release dates and times are as follows:

Anne Spirlet appointed as Non-Traditional Advisor for 2010–2011 school year
Anne Spirlet, Old Colony’s Guidance Counselor, has been appointed as the Non-Traditional Advisor for the 2010 – 2011 school year. Ms. Spirlet will be working with the staff and students to promote and achieve non-traditional opportunities to the faculty and community. Old Colony’s Non-Traditional Program also works closely with the South East Equity Leaders (SEEL).
Cosmetology (2010) seniors pass state board exam
Old Colony's Cosmetology senior class of 2010 has successfully completed their hours and obtained their Massachusetts State Board of Cosmetology Operator’s License. The taking and passing of the State Board has been a requirement for the Cosmetology Department since 2000. The following students successfully passed:
