Applying to Old Colony

Old Colony students

Statewide interest in a high school vocational-technical education is on the rise. Enrollment at Rochester's technical high school reached a ten-year high in September.

With the largest freshman class in many years, Old Colony realized a six precent enrollment growth from last year. In addition, a number of applicants are on a waiting list.

Old Colony is a selective high school with eighth-graders required to apply for admission. Each applicant is rated on grades, attendence, conduct, and sending school recommendations. In addition, all applicants receive a personal interview.

Exploratory Program

Students who are accepted will go through an exploratory program during the first trimester of grade 9. Each student selects four vocational programs to explore, and the school selects two more based on the availability of space. At the end of the process, the student will have explored six programs and then is asked to complete a shop selection sheet. On this sheet, which is co-signed by a parent or guardian, the student selects the desired placements in descending order from most to least. Students are placed on the results of daily evaluations. On these evaluations they are assigned points for their work ethic, attitude, conduce, and interest level. Programs are competitive, and those who do not get their first choice can go on a waiting list for future openings. They must complete waiting list forms which must also be signed by a parent or legal guardian.
